Special events this October

Jin Hai, A Buddhist Monk from California will be gathering for sutra copying in the Skylight Room Oct 5, 12, 19, and 26 from 8:00 - 11:00 a.m.

In Jin's words:

"My immediate interest is in copying the Sutra of the Past Vows of Earth Store Bodhisattva (a sacred text), and possibly illuminating it, for the benefit of an elderly friend here in Gold Hill with heart problems.

I feel like I need to do this as soon as possible. This Sutra Copying practice is very, very powerful if done properly, respectfully and singlemindedly.

When I first came to Boulder (from my monastery in California), I couldn't find a Buddhist monastery in the area. So I stayed alone for a couple of weeks in a lovely cottage up at the Ashram (Truth Consciousness, on Gold Hill, founded by Swami Amar Joti). The nuns there were very generous and kind.

Then, I felt that I needed to come on down the mountain (Gold Hill) to Boulder...in order to get to work on setting up Great Compassion House.

I was offered a ride by a long-term resident of Gold Hill, who also was suddenly moved to give me a place to stay. Then, her parents, a very sweet elderly couple put me up - invited me to stay with them. They are very special people - very kind. And I am still with them after a month. The husband suffers from heart problems.

I am going to copy the sutra for his sake - for Bob's sake...copy it and dedicate it to him. The Sutra of the Past Vows of Earth Store Bodhisattva is extremely powerful for eliminating karma. In fact, it was the recitation of this sutra which liberated my husband from his long-term state of (as it says in the sutra) "...not being able to get well, and not being able to die."

My hope is that if I reverently and carefully copy out the sutra for Bob, it will extend his life and lessen his suffering. So that is the intention and the plan. I feel that I need a clear space - full of light - in which to accomplish this task. In the absence of a proper monastery, Solstice Center seems just right."

Although the primary writing of Earth Store Bodhisattva is nearly unknown in the West, it is a primary Buddhist Scripture in Tibet. The unique journeys of Ksitigarbha are laid out in picturesque detail and allow a reader to truly experience the hells as he saw them.

His whole life was dedicated to going into the hells and lower worlds to liberate souls from these places and teach the rest of humanity the reasons for various hells, the means in which we get there, and the path to liberate ourselves from such misconduct.

Dave Weil has generously agreed to sub for DJ Reedantha on Thursday.
Reed has found himself smitten by a pernicious virus, so to manifest

Breakthrough in Boulder, with Robert Augustus Masters
September 20th-21st, 2008
Deep, efficient, highly effective breakthrough work for those who want to make wise use of their difficulties, and who are ready to work through whatever is obstructing their liberation.
Everything can serve our healing and awakening. Especially the difficult stuff. Going toward, into, and through whatever is troubling us, rather than just rising above or otherwise avoiding it, is a deeply liberating journey. Along the way we learn, firsthand, to be intimate with all that we are: high and low, dark and light, dying and undying
This group will be both a catalyst and sanctuary for such deeply transformative work, providing a safe place to let go of playing it safe. The work will be not be prestructured, but rather structured in fitting accord with group and individual needs and energies.
All kinds of issues and concerns — from the deepest trauma to the seemingly trivial — will be dealt with, through a dynamic, creative mix of psychotherapy, bodywork, spiritual disciplines, dreamwork, and group practices.
And the group will be small, being limited to 12 participants only, so that there will be enough time for everyone to receive in-depth attention.
LOCATION: Solstice Center, 302 Pearl Street, Boulder, Colorado.
TUITION:CAD $550. A deposit of CAD $250 is required, nonrefundable after August 1, 2008. Accommodation and meals are not included.
PAYMENT: In Canadian funds either by bank draft (payable to Robert Masters at 16133 9th Avenue, Surrey, BC V4A 1A5) or by credit card online through the STORE page at http://www.robertmasters.com. Full payment is due by August 15, 2008.

Jyotish: The Wisdom of the Cosmos

Using Vedic Astrology to Embrace Your Infinite Potential with Anand Mehrotra
Monday, August 18, 2008 7:30pm-9:00 pm, Big Room, Solstice Center

"A child is born on that day and at that hour when the celestial rays are in mathematical harmony with his individual karma." -Sri Yukteswar

This evening Anand will take you to the magical world of the planets and unveil their effects on your life: past, present, and future. When you align with the forces of the cosmos, you live in greater balance and integrity with your deepest wisdom.

Jyotish, in Sanskrit translated as “science of light,” is a profound and mathematically sophisticated form of astrology that originated in the ancient Vedic tradition of India. A sister science to Yoga and Ayurveda, it describes how planetary patterns at the time of our birth give valuable clues in helping us understand our life’s journey. Through careful analysis of cosmic influences, Jyotish can help us realistically evaluate our strengths and weaknesses, energy patterns and karmic tedancies in order to optimize our full potential.

By forecasting the changing trends and periods of our lives, Jyotish Astrology can enable us to make more evolutionary choices. It can offer practical remedial measures to help alleviate areas of difficulty, giving us the confidence to manifest our true destiny and create success, happiness and harmony on all levels.

Anand was born and raised in Rishikesh, the foothills of the Himalayas, which is said to be yoga's birthplace. He was raised among Himalayan yogis and masters and adopted a yogic way of life from a young age. Anand has been teaching since the age of 16 in different parts of the world; and his students range from experienced yoga masters in Europe to celebrity clients in L.A. For several years he has provided Vedic astrological readings to Gurmukh Kaur Khalsa and countless others. With his main commitment to freedom, Anand established the Anahata Awareness Movement in 2003. Visit www.anahataawareness.com .

Investment: $20 if paid in advance/ $25 at the door.
Venue: The Solstice Center, 302 Pearl Street, Boulder, CO
Contact: sara@fourmermaids.com or 303-800-0878

Anand will be teaching a weekend intensive on Vedic Astrology at Om Time, Denver from August 15-17.

He will also be available for private readings Monday August 18- Wednesday August 20 in Boulder. These last 1.5 hours and cost $150. To schedule your session, contact Sara at sara@fourmermaids.com or 303-800-0878.

Solstice Center July 2008 events

Hello everybody!

The summer is going well over at Solstice. During the week, Renaissance Adventures has been busy with their kids' camps, and the past weekends have seen some great events. In June, Tina Allen passed through town and did a three-day infant massage facilitator's training. Lisa Temple and her colleagues hosted a well attended 'inner wisdom and health' gathering. Varadaan has returned from his honeymoon, and is getting ready to take more clients (Please call him at 303-827-5823 if you have any questions about Ayurveda or want to schedule a session with him). His wife, Riitta Ojala, will now be basing her psychotherapy practice at the upstairs east office at 302 Pearl. Together, they will form the nexus for "Lotus Healing Arts". Stay tuned for more information about Lotus Healing Arts in the coming months.

The big news about Dance Home is that IT IS SWITCHING FROM TUESDAY TO THURSDAY! The first Thursday dance at 302 Pearl starts on July 3. Paul will be DJ'ing. No further information on DJ's is available at this time. SO: Don't forget! Thursdays are the day!..also, Dance Home will still meet the last Friday of every month, and that means July 25.

Dance Home News: Community Forum Tuesday 6/10 at 6:15p at Solstice

You are invited to participate in the Dance Home Community Forum!! It’s happening at the Solstice Center on Tuesday 6/10, at 6:15p. This is the first Dance Home Community Forum since Mark stepped down as the Director.

As you probably know, there are changes going on at Dance Home (DH), that the Interim Management Team (IMT) is excited about because we believe it will help breathe new life and the needed income to sustain DH. The IMT also realizes that we could have had better communication with the larger DH community before finalizing these changes. We regret any hurt that this may have caused community members

The question is….where do we all go from here?

How do we, as a community, ensure the future of DH? Who are the folks that want to help? What ideas do you have? The purpose of the forum is to start answering these questions.

We are hoping that this meeting is a starting point, to hear what the DH community wants to create. Let’s use this first meeting to get our ideas out on the table, get the ball rolling, and set up a date and agenda for the next community meeting.

Current DJ lineup for June:
June 3 Zoe
June 10 Victor
June17 Paul
June 24 Mark

Workout of the week: Intimate Weave yoga
http://www.dailycamera.com/news/2008/may/27/no-headline---27pworw/
By Aimee Heckel
Tuesday, May 27, 2008

Intimate Weave classes run from 5:30 to 6:45 p.m. Monday, Tuesday and Thursday. Visit www.boulderyogaweave.com for more info.

Lotus Healing Arts in the Skylight Room, 302 Pearl St., Boulder, 720-890-8880, www.302pearl.com

Instructor: Paul Russell, of Boulder. Russell is a former Celtic singer and songwriter who began doing yoga as therapy for an injured hand 12 years ago. He used to teach at Core Power but left because he says his style was too different. Which it definitely is.

His class emphasizes four levels of yoga: the motion (physical posture), emotion (how it makes you feel), notion (related ideas and concepts) and devotion (spirituality).

Who does it? This class was small, only three women.

When: 5:30-5:45 p.m. Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday.

Level: This class is not physically difficult, maybe a two on a 10-point scale, but that might be because it is so slow and deliberate.

Format: Fifteen minutes of physical/emotional/mental warm-up exercises. Then about 30 to 45 minutes of active yoga asanas, followed by 15 minutes of restorative postures. Ends with the same breathing exercise from beginning.

Equipment: Nothing. Not even yoga mats, because the floor is carpeted. Although I found it a little more difficult for my feet to grip the carpet than a mat.

What to wear: Comfortable clothes, no shoes.

Muscles worked: All.

One new move: "Blossom Asana" -- Start from a bent-over, compact position, like a seed, and then "grow" into an arms-extended, standing posture, like the opening of a flower.

"As your body becomes more deeply interconnected with the Earth, the breath, and the embodied image of a flower opening, your yoga postures gradually develop into more complete expressions of beauty, vitality, elegance, simplicity and ease," Russell says.

What's different: This class wasn't like any yoga class I've ever seen. It was interactive and imaginative, building off metaphors and visualization -- not surprising, since Russell's mentor is a mime. Instead of adapting the bodies to the postures, Russell says he wants to adapt the postures to the individual bodies.

After some poses, Russell asked the participants what emotions they felt, and we focused on deepening those emotions while doing the poses again. This allowed me to do moves I have never been able to do before.

What I didn't like: At first, I was not entirely open, and I was unsure what to think of Russell's quirky personality. He is obviously a performer and told a lot of jokes. I wasn't sure where the class was going.

What I loved: Russell grew on me. And suddenly I had a flood of epiphanies. How posture affects your breath and mood. He taught that there is no such thing as balance, only interconnectedness -- which extends to yoga postures, as well as life.

Balancing implies that there are different and separate objects. But if everything is one, there is no balance, because there is no separation. There is only connection. If we feel off balance in our lives, we are simply not acknowledging (because it is there with or without us) our connection.

I love "aha" moments, especially ones that sneak up and surprise you. This class was packed with them.

Inspiration for class: Russell began teaching at Lotus Healing Arts about six weeks ago. He wanted to teach yoga his way, without conforming to a studio's standards.

What others say: "It's real interesting because he doesn't teach like other yoga teachers. ... At the end, suddenly I can do postures I couldn't otherwise do. I feel graceful. I feel good -- not strained or tired. I feel peaceful, yet strong." -- Hildie Henderson, of Boulder.

How I felt after the class: Aware and grounded. And contemplative.

How I felt later: Surprisingly, a little sore.

Internally, I felt inspired. So I wrote about the class:

Ballerina arms embrace the air in front of her like she is hugging a tree. Fingers move up, caressing the invisible universe, who loves it, and shivers with the touch. And her arms extend up in the sacrifice, the celebration, the openness of love.

Now she is the tree. Right foot is roots, grounded and hot, melting into the carpet. Strength in the sinking. Freedom in the commitment. She grows a branch arm. There is no tension in the pose, only the joyous welcoming of openness. There is no balance. Only interconnectedness. Here and in life.

She breathes.

Now she lies on the floor. The tree that she hugged, that she was, is now outside. She focuses on the heat in her stomach: solemn. She focuses on her heart: happiness. She hears a bird outside, inside. She clutches her knee to her chest, holding her leg as tightly as the perfect man, while her muscles release as softly as the perfect woman.

She is both, because she is alone. All one.
